1994

375 x 255 cm

Eduard Ovčáček is a contemporary Czech artist whose lifelong perpetual experimentation with artistic language has resulted in new ways of communications with a viewer through signs and symbols. As an active agent in the period of an artistic movement called Art Informel (structural painting), Ovcacek was an influential  member of numerous artistic groups. Ovcacek lives in Ostrava, where he works with painting, sculpture, garphics, collage, visual and actual poetry, events, istalations and experiments with digitally generated images. We exist in language and we experience through language. Identities are embeded in and strongly tied to the language we use, which, in turn, is intricately bound to the places where we are born and enculturated. Accordingly, fragments of letters, messages and symbols have imagistic aspects that evoke our hidden desires, lost memories or fantasies. Eduard Ovčáček explains that „Lettering and symbols have been my central theme for more than thirty years. My idea of lettering and symbols were formed when I was working on poetry, especially on concrete and visual poetry. At present I regard communication with the viewer by means of lettering, pictograms and symbols as the principal opportunity for art to directly address the viewer and feelings of contemporary man in a way that can be understood the world over.”
