One of the oldest labyrinths that we know of is that of Knossos, on the island of Crete, which was built, according to legend, to imprison the Minotaur. It is a well-known fact that legends contain as much uncertainty as they do truth. They are an indirect account of the human condition, of our dreams, talents and limitations. Did the Knossos labyrinth really exist? We do not know, but today there are so many labyrinths – which, according to the dictionary are “highly intricate constructions aimed at keeping people imprisoned or confused” – that it is highly likely that they have always been around us. They are the cities, the bureaucracy, the shopping centres, the Internet … and even ourselves, aren’t we mazes too?
