“From the Minho and from the Baroque to Africa. If I had not been born in Guimaraes and lived there for the first seventeen years of my life, I would not paint like I do. From my beginnings, the exuberance of colour was clear in the works I painted. And if the colour structures were still not defined, there was a certain sense of festivity, spectacle, baroque. This reflected to a certain extent the world that surrounded me. The pilgrimages of the Feasts of St. Gualtar in Guimaraes are yellow, gold, and red, the sky is blue. If Africa gave me the meaning of the symbol, then the Minho gave me the palette with which I paint.” (PERNES, F.,2006, p. 5, Lisboa: Editorial Caminho, S.A.)
